Designed to destroy racial stereotypes about different ethnic groups the Boxes & Walls program hoped to enlighten not only the student body, but also the general public. Under the direction of Residence Life the program was a huge success drawing in over 1000 students, faculty, and community members. The program was so popular, it had to be extended for just four days to an whole week. We the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Zeta Iota chapter played a role in the program by participating in the African-American room.
Groups of fifteen or less were first introduced the movie Amistad. A story of a revolt of African men, women, and children on a slave ship, who were taken againt their will from their homes. Then the group enters a room filled pictures of black leaders, musicians, artist, and writers, and lastly us. However before the group could enter, people of color were separated out form those not of color. We treated anyone of color with respect, while the others were told to do as they were told. We tried to make the experience as real a possible by yelling at them, telling them that they would never amount to a thing, and finally making them take a test on black history. Only a few could answer even a hand full of the question, which of course was the point. By being on a predominately white campus and switching the majority to the minority, and the minority to the majority the experienced opened many eyes and minds. Other rooms included Jewish, gay/bi/transsexual, and disabled. Next year we hope to participate in the program again to help make it an even larger success!
